October 2009 the Dutch governemet (EVD) asked Five Spices to develop the Holland Lounge for the Business of Design Week 2009 in Hong Kong. Creativity and sustainability were the most important values around which the concept for Dutch Design representation in Hong Kong at the BODW/InnoDesignTech 2009 was based. A striking structure has been developed by using the Dutch Design Chair as a building block for the entire concept. The cardboard chairs are used to sit on, to build desks and partitions and to give away during the fair. Five Spices suggested to have the pavilion ‘dismantle itself’ by giving away the chairs at the end of the exhibition period to reinforce the concept of recycling. Through doing this the Dutch Design Chairs will communicate their ability to be re-used and the Dutch Design values throughout their ‘second life’. Around 500 chairs were handed over to the organisation of the Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism and Architecture, taking place from 4 December 2009 to 27 February 2010, to be re-used in their main pavilion designed by the Japanese architec Shigeru Ban.
